MIRACLE Technical Institute (MTI) in Karonga marked a significant milestone on Monday, celebrating its 25th year of empowering young people with vocational training.
Since its founding in 1999, the Marianist Institute of Rural Artisans for Christian Life Education (MIRACLE) has been dedicated to offering education and hands-on training to youth, providing them with the skills needed to thrive in different industries and trades.
In addition to celebrating its 25 years of operation, 167 graduates received certificates for completing their vocational training programs across various sectors, including informal, formal, and commercial industries.
Fr. Steve Wanyoike Mburu SM, the Marianist Regional Superior of Region of Eastern Africa, who attended as the guest of honor, expressed gratitude for the institution’s journey. He noted that the support of God has been evident throughout the 25 years, and it’s important to recognize this divine guidance.
“Catholic educational institutions are grounded in the belief in God’s existence. They are places where young individuals not only receive an education but also learn the value of loving others,” said Father Mburu.
Wanangwa Sichoni, the Principal of MTI, explained that the institute offers a wide range of formal, informal, and commercial programs to ensure everyone has an opportunity to acquire the necessary skills.
“Many of our students initially lacked the qualifications required for admission, but we recognized the need to include them, and they’ve proven to be just as productive as those from formal backgrounds,” Sichoni shared.
Reflecting on the institute’s growth, he added, “We began with just three courses, but now we offer seven, including two commercial programs. Since 1999, we’ve trained over 2,000 young people in technical skills across the country.”
Sichoni also mentioned that MTI is working on plans to collaborate with education stakeholders to introduce degree programs in the future.
Joseph Chikopa, the Northern Region Manager for TEVETA, commended the Catholic Church for its ongoing commitment to providing quality education to Malawi’s youth through its diverse institutions.
Originally founded to support orphaned children from disadvantaged backgrounds, MTI has recently expanded its outreach to include all young people in Malawi.
